Salespeople Keep Themselves Motivated in Tough Times

You’ve heard it far too many times that it is almost cliché…tough times don’t last, tough people do. For salespeople, they need to keep themselves motivated and here’s a few suggestions on how to do it.

How Salespeople Can Motivate Themselves During Tough Time

Positive attitudes enable salespeople to benefit from motivation. They can’t use one without the other. They also can’t nurture positive attitudes without strong motivation. These two are strongly related and mutually beneficial.

To be realistic and practical, keeping the right level of motivation takes practice and it takes time. It does not happen spontaneously. Salespeople need to put in the effort, and to seek the right knowledge. The effort they put in brings more impact when they focus on the positive aspect and they plan for it. Things are going to run smoother from that point on.

Change happens when the salesperson focuses on their values and cultivate good habits. When they feel like their motivation is running low, they can look around to find other sales people, whom they can relate to, and have successfully pull it off. They’ll find these people if they look deep enough.

Consider these ideas:

1. The connection you make as a person with others are very important towards maintaining your motivation all the way through your sales career, according to a new study from University of California, San Diego.

2. A relationship that is healthy, and supportive helps keep your energy level as salespeople high, and keep you motivated to persist in putting the effort to strive for your sales goals.

3. By surrounding yourselves with people who support your effort to achieve your sales goals, and career, you are able to maintain your motivation. These people are highly likely to celebrate your successes and to cheer you up in your downtime. In other words, they are always there for you. As salespeople, you know how easy it is to lose energy and feel like you’re losing.

4. When you’re clear about what you’re doing in your sales career, your purpose, it becomes much easier for you to set objectives and plan your action around them. When you see your destination, it’s much easier to head towards it, right? It might not be in a straight line but if you keep going, you’ll get there sooner or later. Set specific, measurable and realistic goals, and keep an eye on the final outcome, which motivates you to continue to focus on learning.

5. You need clearly defined, achievable goals for which you have sufficient resources, knowledge, and time and which give you the feeling of accomplishment once you’ve achieved them. You can set daily or weekly goals, but make sure they are specific so you can track your progress.

6. Setting mini-goals is very useful because it is easy to check progress and maintain motivation during a long learning journey. If you want to achieve a certain long-term goal, you should be specific about your goals, not just about your daily or weekly goals. Choose one that you are happy with when you achieve it, but it must be manageable enough for your abilities so you know that your efforts will not be in vain.

7. By thinking about what we want and thinking about success in the subconscious, setting daily "mini-goals" will also help you to unconsciously think about your sales success so that you can move more quickly toward your long-term goal. Setting mini daily goals helps you stay positive, keep your thoughts about what you want, and move closer to your long-term goals more quickly. Achieving these small goals can give you a fabulous sense of pride and increase your motivation to continue your daily life.

8. Perhaps, one of the best ways to maintain the high level for your motivation in selling especially during tough times is to be grateful for what you’ve achieved so far. It might be small and felt insignificant but by appreciating your own success, you just placed a high value on it. This is more beneficial to your emotion than complaining or whining. Give it a shot.

9. Celebrate the small success. It easily adds fuel to your motivation engine. By rewarding yourself with positive reinforcement for the goals you have achieved, it helps you think about what you’ve accomplished previously, and leave a positive mark to motivate you to achieve more future goals and sales success, even during this trying time. Getting excited about your goals is crucial to maintaining your motivation, and these simple things will keep you motivated in the long run.

10. Design a sign or visual aids reminding you of a particular long-term goal and put it up somewhere on your desk. Stupidly, simple physical reminders of your goals make you aware of them, your progress, and what you’ve learned along the way.

So, in short

Once you understand how to hack and maintain your motivation, you will be able to create and achieve what you want, and what you want to give to the world. Choose a sales job you enjoy, and try to find something you like about the task you are assigned. Working on something you love is a potent motivator.

To help you maintain motivation in a job in sales, try getting into a daily routine that empowers you find consistency and be comfortable with your routine, for example, getting up at the same time in the morning, and working on small, achievable goals. Setting small, measurable goals helps you stay motivated when you’re selling, even if things don't go as fast as you'd like.

  1. Do you have words or sentences that you repeat to yourself to get through a tough time? For example, "Tough time don't last, tough people do."

If you have, share them here. Who knows, that might lift the spirit of others too.

Together Everybody Achieve More (TEAM)! I appreciate you.
