Highlights from Reuters Events, Pharma Awards USA 2020 – Day 1

With access to over 60 of the industry’s shining case studies, the 2020 USA Pharma Awards held its virtual ceremony on December 8-9, 2020.

Throughout the ceremony, finalists presented their learnings around patient experience & services, novel collaborations, customer experience, education & awareness, analytics, and more.

Day one of the awards ceremony presented the following awards categories: Most Valuable Collaboration, Most Promising Agile Transformation, Global Health Pioneer, Patient Champion Award for Patient Advocate, Patient Champion Award for Pharma, Most Valuable Education Initiative, and Most Valuable Awareness Initiative.

Here are some highlights from day one of the Pharma Awards USA 2020:

Most Valuable Collaboration Award

The Most Valuable Collaboration was the first award given during the ceremony. The winner of this award exemplifies someone who brings a new proposition to HCPs, payers, and/or healthcare systems by creating new values in the industry with lateral thinking. There were 5 finalists from the following companies: Takeda, Biogen, Servier, AstraZeneca, and ACTO.

The finalists then shared their strategies on how they successfully collaborated with other organizations to achieve their goals and the challenges they had to overcome.

Finalist, Kate Wilson, Global Head of Access to Medicines at Biogen, stated that her organization’s collaboration was with trusted partners. One of her biggest challenges was identifying where to start. She knew that there are many challenges and issues when identifying diversity in clinical trials and that it’s not an easy or quick fix. Kate looked at how her organization can listen and learn from communities, and how they can learn from healthcare providers who are treating the underrepresented patients in these communities. Her organization identified that as being their foundation for where to listen and learn and conduct their research.

After the finalists shared their strategies and challenges, the Most Valuable Collaboration award was awarded to, Global Head of Access to Medicines, Susanne Weissbaecker from Takeda. 

Patient Champion Award: Patient Advocate

The person or small group who had the strongest voice through their advocacy work was awarded the Patient Champion Award. The finalists for the award included Mike Wenger, Jennifer McNary, Lilly Stairs, Keri Yale, and Beverly Vote.

Throughout the session, the finalists shared their strategies on how they engage their audiences and what has worked best for them.

Founder of Patient Authentic and finalist, Lilly Stairs, expressed that her success is measured by the feedback that she gets from her patients on the programs that she is building. Lilly stated that she wants her patients to feel empowered by the programs that she is developing and wants them to walk away feeling like they are educated.

The finalist who had the strongest voice through their advocacy work and who received the Patient Advocacy Award was Mike Wenger, Vice President of Patient Engagement at TrialScope.

“Putting the patient at the center and having that being the north star to work towards, whether you’re sitting in a large pharmaceutical company, or you’re a clinical trial coordinator, or you’re at a patient advocacy group… if we all come together and put that patient at the center and we attack these problems head-on collaboratively, anything is possible.” – Vice President of Patient Engagement at TrialScope, Mike Wenger 

More Awards from Day One 

Other awards that were presented during day one of the ceremony include, Most Promising Agile Transformation, Global Health Pioneer, Patient Champion Award for Pharma, Most Valuable Education Initiative, and Most Valuable Awareness Initiative

The Most Promising Agile Transformation award was for an experimental initiative that has potential to change the status quo. This award is for showing agility through the rapid creation of a product or service that will pivot towards a finished project leading to new opportunities for real customers.

The Global Health Pioneer award was for a pioneering initiative who has made a great impact on an underprivileged population who are in emerging or developing economies.

The winner for the Patient Champion Award for Pharma, was for an individual or group who has worked to make patient’s lives easier from within a pharmaceutical company. 

Lastly, the Most Valuable Education and Awareness Initiatives were for people who have raised awareness in many ways for either a disease, cause, health concern, population or treatment. These initiatives have overall made things easier and clarified scientific concepts for HCPs or patients.

On Day two of the ceremony, the following awards were presented: Most Valuable Data and Insights Initiative, Most Valuable Service or Digital Therapy, Entrepreneur Award for Patient Solution, Entrepreneur Award for Health Solution, Most Valuable Breakthrough/Discovery, and Most Valuable Healthcare/HCP.

Here are some highlights from day two of the Pharma Awards USA 2020:

Most Valuable Data & Insights Initiative 

The first award of day two was Most Valuable Data and Insights Initiative. The organization that harnesses data or informatics/analysis techniques resulting in new opportunities for better patient care would receive this award. The finalists included UCB, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, and Novartis.

Throughout the session, finalists for the Most Valuable Data and Insights Initiative shared their knowledge on the different ways they have been able to find new opportunities for their patients.

“We are really listening carefully to the field for what we can do to continue to make this better, as well as continuing to keep an eye on our model to make sure it’s doing the right things for our people.” – Associate Director, Commercial Leadership Excellence at AstraZeneca, Kevin Murray

One finalist, Kevin Murray stated that his organization, AstraZeneca, is very focused on keeping up with the trends in their industry. Kevin expressed that it is important to listen to your audience and make sure that your services and products are constantly adapting to the people. 

The winner of the Most Valuable Data and Insights Initiative award for having the most valuable data and opening new opportunities for better patient care was Anita Moser, Head of Analytics and Insights of UCB.

Entrepreneur Award: Health Solution

The Entrepreneur Award is awarded to the company or entrepreneur that generated an original healthcare idea, product, or service that benefits either the patients or health professionals in a new way. The finalists for this award include: OneThree Biotech, Annexus Health, SIngleCare, BioLab Sciences, and BioSensics.

The finalists shared how their individual ideas and products are beneficial to the industry.

One of the finalists, Joe Baffone from Annexus Health, shared his new provider facing software technology called, AssistPoint. Joe described his company’s new software tool as a single enterprise workflow platform that helps provider organizations navigate and manage the administrative patient journey.

The Entrepreneur Award was awarded to Bradley Pryde, Co-Founder & COO of OneThree Biotech, for their original ideas and beneficial services to the healthcare industry.

“OneThree Biotech was born out of the largest precision medicine institute in America with the purpose of decreasing the failure rate of bringing therapeutics to market using biology driven artificial intelligence.” – OneThree Biotech

More Awards from Day Two

Other awards that were presented during day two of the ceremony include, Most Valuable Service or Digital Therapy, Entrepreneur Award for Patient Solution,[jg3]  Most Valuable Breakthrough/Discovery, and Most Valuable Healthcare/HCP.

The winner for the Most Valuable Service or Digital Therapy award was for an initiative who provides a holistic service or solution that benefits the patients significantly. This solution can include a digital therapeutic or a digital medicine.

The Entrepreneur Award for Patient Solution was awarded to the company or entrepreneur that generated an original healthcare idea, product, or service that benefits either the patients or health professionals in a new way. 

The Most Valuable Breakthrough/Discovery award was for a genuine pioneer with an original product enhancement or scientific invention that has the potential to provide a significant impact on a patient population. 

Lastly, the award for the Most Valuable Healthcare/HCP is for someone who has delivered healthcare improvements to either healthcare professionals or to healthcare institutions.
