Why has resilience become so important?

“Let me tell you something you already know. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” – Rocky Balboa

As a Florida-based resilience motivational speaker, audience members are always curious to know why resilience and change management have become such important topics. In fact, I would say that in speaking in-person to associations and organizations at Florida conventions, resilience has become everyone’s favorite buzzword.

On resilience

I love the above quote from the Rocky Balboa movie because it beautifully encapsulates the topic of resilience. Resilience is the ability to get up and keep going; the determination to face any change we encounter as an organization; to do something about the challenge and to come together in a common mindset that will not accept defeat as an option.

However, as a Florida resilience speaker, “let me tell you something you already know.” Resilience is personal, in fact, highly personal.

Kendra Cherry, writing for the psychology website verywellmind said:

“Resilience is the ability to cope with and recover from setbacks. People who remain calm in the face of disaster have resilience. People with psychological resilience are able to use their skills and strengths to respond to life’s challenges.”

When I talk to individuals or groups before or after my motivational speeches on resilience, I share that no matter how organizations try to motivate their large sales forces, nursing staff, manufacturing efforts, warehouse workers, research teams or whomever, the conversation employees must have starts with themselves.

It comes down to belief

As a Florida-based motivational speaker on resilience, I don’t expect my audiences to show up with black eyes from re-enacting Rocky V! However, Rocky’s quote was not about professional prize fighters, but about grit; the determination to overcome adversity. Rocky, of course, is fictitious but there are real-life role models all around you who had the courage to get up when that was the only option they had.

Grit is required of everyone on a personal level and no matter where you might be in the organization, the person most responsible for motivating you, is you.

These are not easy times for anyone; professionally or personally. Nevertheless, I see tremendously impressive examples of organizations that are coming back through pandemic, supply-chain issues, inflation and other change challenges with remarkable resilience.  w have they done it?

The most successful companies aren’t composed of people with super-human strength or staffs overflowing with Nobel laureates. What helps those companies endure through the most change-filled times are employees who do remain calm in the face of disaster; who believe in themselves and the person sitting across from them, whether in the next workspace space or in a virtual sense from a thousand or more miles away.

Successful organizations share a common mindset that come what may, they will succeed, and they will rise together. Resilience has become so important because resilience gets companies through the toughest times. And remember, you’re much tougher than you think. In fact, I would bet on you to become greater and better than you ever imagined possible.
